Research began at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the late 1960’s, with the study of ultraviolet (invisible) and blue-light (visible) rays, after it was discovered that astronauts’ eyes were being damaged by the harmful properties of light in space. These radiation light sources from the sun and other environments are now known to contribute to cataract and age-related macular degeneration
